Meet Holly Holm, the Woman Who Knocked Out Ronda Rousey

By Burt Carey

She calls herself “The Preacher’s Daughter.” If she was walking in a busy shopping mall in any city other than Albuquerque, chances are you wouldn’t be able to pick her out.

hollymainHolly Holm, 34, is a 5-foot, 8-inch blonde, who weighs just 135 pounds. She’s also the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight champion, undefeated in 10 bouts as a mixed martial arts fighter. Holm knocked out the previous champ, the highly touted and heavily favored Ronda Rousey, in the second round of their UFC 193 match Saturday at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.

And she really is the daughter of a minister.

Holm rocked the mixed martial arts fighting world by allowing Rousey to be the aggressor, then landing an explosive, devastating kick to the left side of Rousey’s head. It was Rousey’s first loss as a UFC fighter, and it came mere weeks after Sports Illustrated had dubbed her “The World’s Most Dominant Athlete.”

Suddenly the fighting world stopped paying all of its attention to Rousey and recognized that there’s another woman on earth that packs a mean punch and kicks harder than a mule. And just as suddenly, Holly Holm’s Instagram account lit up with nearly a half-million followers. The champ took to Instagram to celebrate with them: _hollyholm

Best feeling in the world. Still trying to process and take it all in. There aren’t enough words to express what I am feeling. Thank you @ufc for the opportunity and most of all thank you to my team for believing in me. All the hours in the gym and all the years of dedication to help me get to this moment. This is a priceless moment and I could not have done this on my own.@mmacoachwink its been 17 years and one hell of a ride. Let’s see where it goes from here! Greg Jackson and @izzystylewrestling … My transition to mma would not be possible without you. All of the coaching and teammates @jacksonwink_mma …… You are my family and love you all so much! I only hope to make you proud and be a good champion. And to all of my fans….. I would not be able to live the dream without you. Much love to you all!! Big

It was big, all right. So big that Lady Gaga took to Twitter to chide Rousey for refusing to touch gloves with The Preacher’s Daughter prior to the fight. So big that Republican presidential candidate and real estate mogul Donald Trump would also use Twitter to voice his approval of the fight’s outcome, and to point out that he doesn’t think Rousey is a nice person. Rousey’s support of Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was well publicized before the fight.

Born to Church of Christ preacher Roger Holm and Tammy Bredy, a massage therapist, in Albuquerque, N.M., in 1981, Holm is the youngest of three children. She’s remained in the Albuquerque area her entire life, and graduated from Manzano High School there.

Her future in fighting began with aerobics classes, where cardio-kickboxing instructor Mike Winkeljohn first recognized her potential and started training her for amateur kickboxing tournaments. She claimed a national amateur kickboxing championship in 2001, and having compiled a 6-0-2 record, turned pro the following year.

She attended the University of New Mexico for a year then turned to professional boxing and kickboxing. She held several boxing titles and compiled a 33-2-3 record, with 9 knockouts. She defended titles 18 times in three different divisions. She was named female Fighter of the Year by Ring Magazine in 2005 and again in 2006.

In 2011, Holm turned to MMA, married roofing company executive Jeff Kirkpatrick in April 2012, and departed the boxing ring in 2013 to devote all of her time to fighting inside a fenced ring. She now also trains with Greg Jackson at the Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA Academy in Albuquerque.
